Bangkok

Bangkok , or the "City of the Angels", was established on the banks of the Chao Phraya in 1782. This bustling capital of Thailand is famous for its Grand Palace , its many Buddhist temples and a bustling nightlife probably unrivaled in the world. The city has harmoniously blended its traditional Buddhist lifestyle with western influences, and the result is the tall skyscrapers along the Chao Phraya that exist side by side with old Buddhist temples.

The Grand Palace is located inside a huge walled compound in the heart of the city. it sprawls over an area of 1.5 square kilometers. The Chakri Maha Prasad is modeled on ancient Thai architectural principles based on spires and is heavily influenced by western architectural styles. The Grand Palace also houses a small Buddhist shrine and a museum showcasing artifacts found on the Palace premises. The Vimanmek Palace is made of the Thai golden teak and was moved to its present location in Bangkok almost 100 years back.


Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, or " New City ", is actually more than 7 centuries old. It lies approximately 700 kilometers north of Bangkok . Chiang Mai was established as the capital of the Lanna rulers, north of present Thailand . Later, it was annexed by the kingdom of Myanmar . As a result, the old temples, shrines, palaces and forts still bear traces of Myanmarese influence. Today, the ancient temples and buildings of the old Chiang Mai exists side by side with tall skyscrapers, smooth highways, suspension bridges and mountain underpasses. Chiang Mai is famed for its stunning natural beauty. The Chiang Dao Wildlife reserve has limestone hills, and a wealth of rare mountain orchids, many kinds of birds and insects, besides commanding panoramic view of the Chiang Dao district. The sanctuary has a stupa (shrine), and a temple with images of the Buddha. The wildernesses and mountains around Chiang Mai are ideal for biking, trekking, camping, boating and horse riding. You can also get traditional Thai massages at the many resorts in and around this city. The Chiang Mai National Museum has exhibits relating to the ancient Lanna kingdom. The Chiang Mai Zoo has over 200 animals and birds and is a favorite of children.

Phuket

Phuket is one of the major tourist destinations of Thailand . This small island of pristine beaches lies in the Andaman Islands off the coast of the Thai mainland. Spend your day relaxing at the white beaches, swimming and snorkeling in the emerald seas, cruising on the quiet lagoons and attending the late evening bonfire gatherings on the beach. The major attractions of Phuket are the white beaches, where the quiet ocean waves lap against the shores. The Crocodile World and Elephant Land Zoo on the Chana Chaoron Road is a unique concept, since animals are not housed in cages. On the Thepksatri Circle , you will see the Heroines' Monument, dedicated to two sisters who showed extraordinary courage against the raiding Burmese army over 200 years ago.

Hua Hin

The town of Hua Hin is the original Thai resort, established by King Rama IV 70 years back. The summer palace of the King was built around the same time, and a railway line ensured that the resort town became accessible to the King as well as his subjects. The sleepy fishing village became a bustling holiday destination for the rich, much before Thailand 's beach resorts were discovered by Western tourists.
