Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai, or " New City ", is actually more than 7 centuries old. It lies approximately 700 kilometers north of Bangkok . Chiang Mai was established as the capital of the Lanna rulers, north of present Thailand . Later, it was annexed by the kingdom of Myanmar . As a result, the old temples, shrines, palaces and forts still bear traces of Myanmarese influence. Today, the ancient temples and buildings of the old Chiang Mai exists side by side with tall skyscrapers, smooth highways, suspension bridges and mountain underpasses. Chiang Mai is famed for its stunning natural beauty. The Chiang Dao Wildlife reserve has limestone hills, and a wealth of rare mountain orchids, many kinds of birds and insects, besides commanding panoramic view of the Chiang Dao district. The sanctuary has a stupa (shrine), and a temple with images of the Buddha. The wildernesses and mountains around Chiang Mai are ideal for biking, trekking, camping, boating and horse riding. Phuket
